Making creative connections and providing opportunities for everyone in the communities of Sedgemoor to participate in arts and cultural activities.

The Creative People and Places Sedgemoor Consortium came together in 2019 in order to make creative connections and provide opportunities for everyone in the communities of Sedgemoor to participate in arts and cultural activities, with a focus on reaching and including those who have little previous engagement with the arts.

Consortium chairperson Claire Tough from Homes in Sedgemoor explains the reasons for the programme. “Social isolation and lack of community connection are significant issues for some in the Sedgemoor district at the best of times. With the community being locked in for the duration, this is being exacerbated. These wonderful creative arts projects will enable people to make new connections in the community and stimulate their creativity during lockdown.”

We will focus our grass roots activity in four local hubs: Bridgwater, Highbridge, Cheddar and Polden Hills. Each of these hubs will be rooted in community, and established in partnership with the venue and/or local community organisations. Each of these hubs will have their own community reference group comprising participants, local artists and other interested individuals to provide local representation and the expertise on what is needed for each community. They will be established in line with our stated values of sustainability, empowerment, excellence and diversity. This involves ensuring that we allow exploration, research and development, artistic risk taking and community direction in all our activities.

Still to come…
Create the Future – a series of pop-up mini art festivals with creative participation and consultation activities in our four hubs.

Our consultation activities to date have indicated a need for four key services to be performed by Seed:
•    Connecting
•    Presenting/Curating
•    Creating
•    Facilitating

Our offer over the next three years will be built around servicing those needs. We will provide services through four programmes, set out as follows:

•    Grass Roots: Participatory arts for the community
•    Green Shoots: Skills development
•    Tall Timbers: Major commissions and public events
•    Cultivator: Support for the wider creative arts, culture and heritage eco-system of Sedgemoor.
